I Built a Bike

Posted by on Friday, February 2, 2018

Something I love about living and working in downtown Charleston is how easy it is to get around on a bike. I ride nearly every day – primarily to and from work. In my garage I have a pile of bike parts that have been growing over the last few years, and recently I amassed enough parts to build an entire bike.

It started in 2014 when I spotted an aluminum frame with a carbon fork on clearance sale. I’d been looking for something like it to start a new fixed gear build. I bought it – then immediately moved to a smaller apartment. I put the frame in storage and the build on hold for a few years. I’d keep my eye out for sales or parts that I needed to complete the bike and add them to the box of parts. After moving to Charleston I finally had a space to work on building the bike, so last September I ordered the last big part – the wheelset.

The wheels, fork, and seatpost are all made of carbon fiber. Those combined with the aluminum frame make it the lightest bike I’ve ever owned. It’s fun to ride and looks cool too.

Here are some photos:

  • Light
  • Fast
  • The tri-spoke wheel makes a funny noise
  • One time a bike messenger told me I had a cool bike

  • Deep dish tires and low weight make it susceptible to strong winds.
  • Tips over easily when trying to photograph
  • It took me 3 years to finish the build
  • Hard to slow down

Final word: Always remember to wear your helmet and exercise proper road safety.

Really nice build, DO. And bikes definitely beat cars when getting around downtown….faster, easier, less expensive, healthier, better sightseeing and just way more fun.

What are your favorite spots/streets to ride in downtown CHS? How about your least favorite?

Most favs = most of the small two-way streets downtown; Murray around the battery, Hampton Park circle, Spruill up to Park Circle early on a weekend morning.

Least favs = any of the major downtown roads (Meeting, East Bay, Calhoun, King, Lockwood, Broad, Coming, etc.) because they’re not set up with bike lanes, getting over the Ashley River Bridges, any of the cobblestone streets.

    Happy riding…
