I Built a Bike

Something I love about living and working in downtown Charleston is how easy it is to get around on a bike. I ride nearly every day – primarily to and from work. In my garage I have a pile of bike parts that have been growing over the last few years, and recently I amassed enough parts to build an entire bike.

It started in 2014 when I spotted an aluminum frame with a carbon fork on clearance sale. I’d been looking for something like it to start a new fixed gear build. I bought it – then immediately moved to a smaller apartment. I put the frame in storage and the build on hold for a few years. I’d keep my eye out for sales or parts that I needed to complete the bike and add them to the box of parts. After moving to Charleston I finally had a space to work on building the bike, so last September I ordered the last big part – the wheelset.

The wheels, fork, and seatpost are all made of carbon fiber. Those combined with the aluminum frame make it the lightest bike I’ve ever owned. It’s fun to ride and looks cool too.

Pros:

• Light

• One time a bike messenger told me I had a cool bike

Cons:

• Deep dish tires and low weight make it susceptible to strong winds.
• Tips over easily when trying to photograph
• It took me 3 years to finish the build
• Hard to slow down
